September 24, 2021-( Fort Smith, AR) United Way of Fort Smith Area is proud to host the 16th annual Power of the Purse luncheon and silent auction to benefit Dolly Parton's Imagination Library. The event will take place on October 21st from 11:30 am to 1 pm at the Bakery District, located at 70 South 7th Street in Fort Smith. Dolly Parton Imagination Library is United Way's early childhood literacy initiative, which provides age-appropriate books to children from birth to age five once a month at no cost to the parent. The ticket price is $40. To reserve your ticket, contact Angie Ruth at aruth@unitedwayfortsmith.org or by calling 479-782-1311.

The silent auction will include high-end handbags, including beautiful Kate Spade, Michael Kors, and Hobo. "Power of the Purse is our most important fundraiser of the year for Dolly Parton's Imagination Library," said Angie Ruth, Interim Director for United Way. Ruth added, "We have such a strong group of women leaders in our community that come to this event to help support getting books into the hands of local children. The most important part of a child's development occurs between birth and five years old. Being read to is an essential part of that development."

This year's guest speakers will be Julie Fisk and Kendra Roehl from The Ruth Experience. Julie Fisk left a 15-year-career as a lawyer to follow her childhood dream to become an author. Always passionate about words, she shifted her storytelling from courtrooms and boardrooms to dinner tables and backyard barbecues, where she uncovers truth about faith, kindness, and a longing for friendship. Kendra Roehl earned a master's degree in social work and naturally became a defender of those in need, serving others through hospice, low-income housing, and veterans affairs programs. Kendra and her husband have become well-known advocates for foster care, taking in over 20 children in six years and adopting three of them. Together, Julie Fisk, Kendra Roehl, and Kristin Demery have written a series of books on kindness, generosity, failure, struggle, loss, a longing for true friendship, and an unwavering desire to live intentionally through it all.

They invite others into the conversation through The Ruth Experience, a growing online community of women. Look for a good friend? You'll find one there—and so much more. It's where women go to share their real and raw stories, gain encouragement and find belonging. What started with three friends wanting to spend December doing random acts of kindness as families ignited a movement and the publication of their first book, The One Year Daily Acts of Kindness Devotional.
