CALIFORNIA — From sprawling sandy beaches to lush national parks — the Golden State has a lot to offer. California is also peppered with cities brimming with art and culture.

Twenty-five of California's cities were listed on 2021's Most Fun Cities in America, a report released Wednesday by financial advise website Wallethub.

Unsurprisingly, Las Vegas — with its premiere nightlife and vast hiking destination — took the no. 1 slot. The city also happens to be a big destination for residents neighboring California.

The highest ranking California city was San Francisco.

Wallethub compared 182 cities across the nation, including 150 of the most populous municipalities using three metrics: Entertainment and recreation, nightlife and parties and cost.

Cities were also scored based on the amount of festivals held in town, restaurants per capita, amount of park playgrounds, most accessible bars, dance clubs per capita, lowest average beer prices and lowest movie costs.

San Francisco, the highest ranking California city on the list (no. 6), took the no. 1 slot for having the most dance clubs per capita. The city also scored high for offering an abundance of festivals and for having some of the most restaurants per capita.

Meanwhile, Los Angeles also scored high on the list of cities with the most dance clubs per capita.

In Orange County, Huntington Beach scored among the top cities with the most fitness centers per capita.

The average American spends more than $2,900 on entertainment per year, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Wallethub researchers took the ability to "have fun on a budget" into consideration while scoring California cities and asked experts to weigh in on cost.

Gary L. Rose, a professor at Sacred Heart University in Connecticut, offered the some advise for considering the cost of fun.

"Reserve your budget for cultural and historical enjoyment, such as museums, guided tours of historical locations, and of course some spending at a landmark restaurant," Rose said." Never exhaust your budget, however. Return home with a surplus. Do not bust the bank on vacation."
