YUBA CITY, CA — A 20-year-old McDonald’s employee in Northern California is recovering after a coworker threw hot oil on him, according to reports.
The attack on Jacob Smith occurred Saturday night at the restaurant in Yuba City, KCRA 3 reported, adding the coworker, Jalani Bluett, left the scene but was later arrested.
Smith suffered second-degree burns to his face, arm and back, according to a GoFundMe started by his mother to seek donations for housing, utility, daily living, transportation and medical expenses.
“This unexpected tragedy has created a major setback at a time when he should be looking forward to building his life and planning his future,” Amber Smith wrote of her son on the fundraiser webpage.
As of last week, Jacob Smith remained in intensive care and was scheduled to receive skin grafts, according to the GoFundMe.
The fundraiser had received over $157,000 in donations as of Wednesday night.
“As much as I want to be angry, or want to hate people and be scared of people it's just so hard to be when I have so many people showing their love for me,” Jacob Smith wrote in a GoFundMe update, expressing particular gratitude for his family, friends and fiancée.
Bluett is charged with battery with serious bodily injury, according to the Sutter County Sheriff’s Office, which noted he is being held without bail.
