Are CA Walmart Stores Really Lowering Prices? We've Got The Receipts

This summer, Walmart has rolled back prices on thousands of products, but is it actually saving you money?

CALIFORNIA — On Monday, Trump lauded the national chain Walmart in a social media post for lowering its prices “by a lot” to celebrate the nation’s 250th birthday. But are California grocery shoppers really seeing a difference on their Walmart receipts?

In his TruthSocial post, Mr. Trump wrote that “one of the biggest, best, and smartest Retailers in America, Walmart, will be lowering prices, by a lot, at my Administration's request to celebrate our great Country's 250th birthday.” Walmart, which did not immediately reply to Mr. Trump’s post, instead announced that its price reductions took effect last week, according to a Walmart spokesperson.

The national retailer is known for emphasizing low prices and affordability, according to a report by Vital Knowledge’s analyst Adam Crisafulli, released by CBS. The Consumer Price Index in May reached its highest level in more than three years, driven by rising energy prices amid the war with Iran. As the president focuses on Walmart’s lowered prices, it is "a win/win for both sides — Trump needs to improve his messaging around affordability ahead of the midterms, and Walmart loves to occupy the low-price spotlight,” Crisafulli’s report for Vital Knowledge stated.

Understanding the Affordability Struggle In California

In California, the cost of gas and groceries is always the big question when it comes to affordability. Many shoppers have changed how and when they shop, as well as what kinds of foods and sundries they purchase in recent months as inflation has spiked. American households handle purchases and bills as an “affordability struggle.” Both Republicans and Democrats polled by The Guardian say the American economy is worsening, from pain at the pump to the weight of that grocery bill, especially when costs are compounded by rising debt.

Big-box stores, such as Walmart, which operates 303 retail locations in California, of which 144 are Supercenters, remain attractive to many shoppers as non-membership warehouses that regularly reduce prices on seasonal items, according to a spokesperson.

“Rollbacks on summer essentials, grilling, outdoor items and more went into effect before the 4th of July,” they said. Walmart did not mention the president’s involvement in those decisions. “We are always focused on keeping prices low, and our website has a list of all of the rollback ‘prices for summer.”

Over the July 4 week, California Walmart shoppers may have snagged a can of Folgers Coffee dressed up for the holiday, but it wasn’t just the fireworks. The coffee, recently priced at over $22 for the same-sized coffee, was marked down to $17.76.

“Rollbacks will always last about 90 days, and the web link on Walmart.com is the best way to track what items are marked down and when,” they said.

Since grocery prices began to rise, many of our shopping habits have shifted. Recently, our purchases of ground beef dropped sharply as our family opted instead for ground turkey, chicken, or pork due to prohibitive beef prices. Snacks, soft drinks, and cookies have also fallen away, in favor of fresh fruit and homemade options.
