MONTEREY COUNTY, CA — Police said they found the car Tuesday in connection with an Amber Alert issued for a 14-year-old girl who remains missing.
On Sunday, officials issued an amber alert for Diana Galvez Ortiz, 14, who authorities believe was impregnated by her 38-year-old father, Sergio Galvez Perez, after law enforcement found a dead infant last month.
The Monterey County Sheriff's office stated they found the white Nissan Altima with no license plates Tuesday that was listed in the Amber Alert.
Detectives previously said they found video surveillance that showed Galvez Perez and Galvez Ortiz in the Salinas area in a white Nissan Altima with no license plates.
They were last seen at Constitution Boulevard and East Laurel Drive in Salinas, according to California Highway Patrol more than a month ago where the newborn was found.
The Amber Alert described Galvez Perez as a Hispanic man, around 5 feet 5 inches tall and 170 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes.
Galvez Ortega is described as around 4 feet 10 inches tall and 100 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes.
"Since the Amber Alert was issued, the Monterey County Sheriff's Office has received hundreds of calls, emails, and messages containing information related to this investigation," police said. "We are grateful to the members of our community who have taken the time to share information and remain vigilant. We recognize that the community has many questions and wants additional information, and we understand that not having those answers can be frustrating."
On Aug. 1, the infant, whom investigators are calling "Baby Angelita," was found dead along Struve Road, according to the sheriff's office.
Police said their investigation revealed that a teen girl had given birth to Baby Angelita on the side of the road, and that the newborn was left on the ground.
A post-mortem forensic examination found that the baby still had her umbilical cord attached and signs of traumatic injury, officials said.
On Aug. 30, the sheriff's office said the 14-year-old girl was wanted on suspicion of murder and that Galvez Perez faced warrants of incest, lewd or lascivious acts with a child under 14, lewd acts with a minor, unlawful sexual intercourse, child concealment and child endangerment.
On Sept. 2, the Monterey County District Attorney Jeannine Pacioni sent out a statement clarifying the criminal charges for the teen girl, stating she was a victim and that no charges had been filed against her.
"Sergio is currently wanted for numerous felony violations involving Diana, in which she is the victim," police said. "These allegations are extremely serious and are an important part of why locating Diana and ensuring her safety and well-being remain a priority."
Community leaders and locals have criticized the police for their initial handling of the case and for not sending an Amber Alert earlier.
The sheriff's office is asking anyone who sees Galvez Perez or the 14-year-old girl to immediately call 911.
Officials warned the public not to approach or confront Galvez Perez.
