Rescuers are racing the clock to save Luna, an 18-pound Jack Russell Terrier mix from California who has been lost in Yellowstone National Park for over a month, according to reports.
Luna had been locked in her family's cabin while her humans were away, with a "do not disturb" sign on the door, when housekeeping mistakenly opened the door and Luna ran off into the park, according to the Montana-based Norris Ark Training & Recovery Center, which is aiding in the search.
Luna, who was feral as a young dog, has been spotted repeatedly in the more than 30 days since she disappeared, including Friday, when she looked to be healthy and uninjured, the rescue said.
But most of Yellowstone's park roads close in early November, the rescue's permit expires Oct. 31, and there are lodging and food availability concerns to contend with even earlier, starting Oct. 20, according to Norris Ark.
Snow has already coated the area, SFGate reported, but Norris Ark President Katie Boucher remains optimistic.
"The odds are good that we're going to get her back as long as the weather doesn't come in too fast, as long as the public doesn't disrupt our operations, and as long as we don't run out of time," Boucher told the outlet.
Norris Ark is using an outdoor kennel with a remote trigger and a lure of Luna's scent as well as the smells of her home and family, according to the rescue.
Anyone who sees Luna should take a picture and call 406-946-2825, the rescue said. They should not pursue, call or try to catch her, according to the rescue.
