Welcome To America's Most Expensive Zip Code, Where A Typical Home Is Over $10 Million

Six of America's 10 most-expensive zip codes for 2026 are in California, including No. 1, according to a recent ranking.

Six of America's 10 most-expensive zip codes for 2026 are in California, and one is breaking records with an eight-figure median sale price, according to a recent ranking from Property Shark.

The property data and research company found that 94027 in Atherton was the costliest zip, with a median sale price of $10.725 million, marking the first time a U.S. zip has ever reached an eight-figure median price, Property Shark reported.

This was Atherton's ninth time as America's most expensive zip in the past 11 years, after it was pushed out last year by Florida's Fisher Island, which came in third for 2026 with a median price of $7.217 million, according to Property Shark.

Slots No. 2, 4 and 7 all went to zips in New York, while two in Newport Beach took Nos. 5 and 6 in the ranking. Newport Beach was the nation's most expensive city for 2026, with all of its six residential zips ranked in the top 100.

Beverly Hills, Santa Barbara and Los Altos rounded out the top 10 in slots No. 8, 9 and 10, respectively.

"California remained the most dominant state, supplying more than half of the 100 most expensive U.S. zip codes," according to Property Shark. "Still, its 57% share was its lowest in more than a decade and well below its 73% peak in 2019."

The cause of the Golden State's lowered share is a shrinking presence in the Bay Area, although the region is also seeing record highs for many of the zips that remain in the ranking, Property Shark reported.

This was the first year that the area was not the country's sole most expensive metro, with the region instead tying with New York at 31 zip codes each — a significant decline from 2019, when the Bay Area peaked with 55 of the richest zips, according to Property Shark.

Below is the 2026 top 10 ranking by median sale price:

  1. Atherton, 94027, $10.725 million
  2. Sagaponack, New York, 11962, $7.35 million
