SACRAMENTO, CA — Californians looking for state government jobs can now use a new artificial intelligence tool that matches their resumes with potential careers in state service, Gov. Gavin Newsom announced this week.
The new Skills Matching tool, available through the state's CalCareers website, allows applicants to upload their resumes and receive recommendations for state job classifications that align with their skills and experience.
The goal is to simplify a hiring process that often requires applicants to navigate hundreds of specialized job classifications to determine which positions they qualify for.
"We're taking the search out of finding a state job – and connecting people directly to roles that are right for them," Newsom said in a statement. "There's no reason this process should be this onerous – especially when we have the tools and technology to make accessing state jobs easier."
The tool was developed by the California Department of Human Resources and the state's Office of Data and Innovation.
It uses generative AI technology to analyze an applicant's resume and suggest state government career paths based on their qualifications.
State officials said the tool is particularly useful for people unfamiliar with the state's hiring system, which uses specialized terminology and job classifications.
"This tool will help hundreds of thousands of applicants understand where to begin their search and cut through the specialized terminology of state classifications," CalHR Director Monica Erickson said.
The tool has already attracted thousands of potential applicants.
Since its soft launch, approximately 21,500 people have clicked to explore the tool, and nearly 8,000 have submitted resumes or other information to receive job classification recommendations, according to the governor's office.
State officials said the tool also includes privacy protections. Resume information and conversations are not saved on the website, and each new use begins a separate session without retaining information from previous searches.
The Skills Matching tool uses the same technology as AskCA, another state AI initiative designed to help Californians navigate government services, including finding employment, starting businesses and recovering from disasters.
Officials said feedback from early users will help guide future improvements to the job-matching tool.
