SACRAMENTO, CA — The polls have closed, and results will soon start pouring in for the fate of Proposition 42, the ballot measure that prohibits new state taxes on personal property, including business interests, intellectual property, and financial assets such as retirement or investment accounts.
The initiative made its way to the ballot with the substantial financial backing of billionaire and Google co-founder Sergey Brin. He has a motive: Defeat Prop. 40, the highly discussed billionaire tax.
The Secretary of State and Patch will update the results throughout the night as votes are tallied; refresh this page for the latest updates.

Gov. Gavin Newsom has endorsed Prop. 42. Conversely, he is urging residents to vote no on Prop. 40. Prop. 42 (and Prop. 41) contain provision clauses stating that conflicting voter-approved measures on the same ballot become void.
As a result, if either Prop. 41 or Prop. 42 receives a higher "yes" vote total than Prop. 40, the latter is doomed.
