CHICO, CA — The police department in one Northern California city is offering an $80,000 signing bonus to those willing to answer the call as an emergency dispatcher.

Chico police hope to attract experienced dispatchers with the offer, which expires Feb. 25 and is available to candidates with at least two years of experience in a comparable position, Action News Now reported, noting the city’s current staffing is roughly half what it should be.

“Every call is different," Dispatcher Victoria Pinasco told the outlet. “Sometimes we take a call where it’s reporting stolen vehicles. The next call it’s someone not breathing so there is a lot of stress but the way you are helping people each day makes it all worth it.”
