Video game retailer GameStop is on track to close dozens of California stores in January as part of the shuttering of hundreds of locations nationwide.

GameStop in December said it planned to close "a significant number of additional stores" in the 2025 fiscal year, which runs through January 2026. That's on top of 590 stores the company closed in the prior fiscal year, according to a Security and Exchange Commission filing.

A blog that tracks GameStop closures indicated that 390 stores nationwide are set to close in January, including 36 in California:

The closures are part of a "broad store portfolio optimization" due to market shifts toward digital gaming and "underperformance," the company wrote in an SEC filing.

The company shuttered over two dozen California locations in 2025.
