CA Prop. 1 Real-Time Election Results

Voters have had their say on Proposition 1, which would authorize the state to issue $11.25 billion in new bonds for housing programs.

SACRAMENTO, CA — The polls have closed, and results will soon start pouring in for the fate of Proposition 1, the ballot measure that would authorize the state to issue $11.25 billion in new bonds for affordable housing, homeownership programs and veterans housing assistance.

If approved, Proposition 1 would authorize $10 billion in general obligation bonds to fund affordable rental housing and homeownership programs. An additional $1.25 billion would fund a state program offering veterans financial assistance to purchase homes, farms or mobile homes. The measure is projected to help finance the construction of approximately 40,000 new homes and apartments and assist another 40,000 people in becoming homeowners.

"This is California delivering," Gov. Gavin Newsom said when the agreement was announced in June.

Opponents, however, have said the state should use existing state budget revenues to fund affordable housing and veterans' programs instead of borrowing billions of dollars and add long-term debt.
