CA Prop. 2 Real-Time Election Results

Voters have had their say on Proposition 2, amend the state constitution to strengthen its rainy day fund.

SACRAMENTO, CA — After polls closed Tuesday night, early results showed most California voters supported Proposition 2, the ballot measure that would amend the state constitution to strengthen its rainy day fund, allowing the state government to squirrel away up to 10 percent more savings each year for lean years.

Proposition 2, formally known as the Save for California's Future Act, would give state lawmakers greater flexibility in managing reserves and debt by changing the rules governing California’s Budget Stabilization Account, the state's primary rainy day fund. The constitutional amendment was placed on the Nov. 3 statewide ballot by the Legislature.

Supporters of Proposition 2 argue that California should save more during prosperous years because the state's revenue system can produce large surpluses that disappear when the economy weakens.

Opponents have said the measure would give state lawmakers more control over taxpayer money while making it less likely for Californians to receive refunds when state revenues exceed constitutional spending limits.
