CA Prop. 5 Real-Time Election Results
Voters have had their say on Proposition 5, which could overhaul the state's recall election process.
SACRAMENTO, CA — The polls have closed, and early results showed California voters were almost evenly divided on Proposition 5, the ballot measure that could change the state's recall election process, eliminating the practice of choosing a replacement candidate on the same ballot as a recall.
The proposed constitutional amendment, would change the process for filling vacancies after voters recall a state official. Rather than electing a replacement during the recall election, the vacancy generally would be filled according to the state's existing procedures for vacant offices.
California's constitution currently requires recall elections for state officials to include two questions: whether the official should be removed and, if so, who should replace the official.

Supporters argue the current recall process can be confusing because voters must decide whether to remove an elected official while also choosing a potential replacement from a lengthy list of candidates. They say separating the recall vote from the selection of a successor would simplify the process and allow voters to focus on whether the official should remain in office.
Opponents contend that eliminating the successor vote would give voters less direct say in who assumes the office if a recall succeeds.
