CALIFORNIA — Senator Kamala Harris is dropping out of the Democratic presidential primary contest, after entering the race as a leading candidate less than a year ago but failing to amass significant support in the ensuing months.

Harris's decision came after she was told that her campaign would need to go into debt in order to stay afloat, the New York Times reported.

"I'm not a billionaire, I can't fund my own campaign," Harris said in a video released by her campaign. "As the campaign has gone on, it has become harder and harder to raise the money we need to compete."
