New Poll Shows Becerra With Big Lead In CA Governor's Race And Voters Anxious Over Economy

SACRAMENTO, CA — A new poll shows California gubernatorial candidate Xavier Becerra is the clear frontrunner in the race, but California voters have a lot of anxiety about the economy.

The poll conducted by SurveyUSA found about 55 percent of California voters said they would vote for Becerra if the election were held today, compared with 33 percent for Hilton.

The poll also showed Hilton leading by 71 points with California Republicans and 2024 Trump voters, 58 points with conservatives, and 73 points with 7% of likely voters who said immigration is California's biggest issue. His opponent Becerra showed a double-digit lead with the rest of the demographic subgroups, on all other issues, except in rural areas and the Inland Empire where he leads by 5 points.

When asked about Gov. Gavin Newsom's performance, voters were almost equally split. About 44 percent said they approve of the job the California governor is doing, but 42 percent said they disapprove.

Thirty-nine percent of California voters also said they disapprove of the California Legislature's performance.

But the poll also showed significant uneasiness about the economy among California voters. The cost of living was the biggest issue for Californians according to 41 percent of voters.

Eighty-four percent of California voters said the cost of food has increased over the past six months, followed by 77 percent who said the cost of transportation or gasoline has increased, and 63% who have seen an increase in their utility bills.

Seventy percent of Golden State voters said they are concerned about paying their bills each month, including 35 percent who said they were very concerned and 35 percent who were somewhat concerned.

What's more, 31 percent of all adults said they expect to be worse off financially in six months than they are today. Only 22 percent said the expect to be better off.

Seventy-one percent of Californians were polled said their incomes have not kept pace with their costs.

About 1,000 adults were interviewed for the new SurveyUSA poll from Sept. 15 through Sept. 20.
