Agoura Hills Civic Center Celebrates 10th Anniversary

The city landmark marks its 10th year with a simple but heartfelt celebration.

City officials and invited guests celebrated the 10th anniversary of the on Friday night. Approximately 150 guests took part in the festivities.

Located at the base of Ladyface Mountain, the Civic Center houses the City Hall, Council Chambers and the library. Connecting twin buildings showcase the Craftsman architectural style of the complex and the efficient use of wood and glass.

Before the evening program began, a string quartet serenaded the guests as they mingled and toured the facility.

“All of you make Agoura a great, environmentally sensitive community to live in,” said Mayor Harry Schwarz in his opening remarks.

He also recognized and thanked several officials who had been instrumental in bringing the complex to fruition, particularly Los Angeles County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky.

“I was here when this site opened and I’m pleased to be back on its 10th anniversary,” said Yaroslavsky.

Next, Schwarz thanked Agoura’s neighboring cities for their support. Calabasas Mayor James Bozajian said a few words, as did Westlake Village Councilwoman Philippa Klessig. 

Schwarz also recognized longtime Agoura residents Rick and Diane Haupt for their tireless volunteer efforts in the library, specifically their work for the . The used-book store, open every Saturday, receives many boxes of donated books every week, and the proceeds help the library beef up its collection and other materials.

The mayor presented the Haupts with a crystal book as a gesture of thanks.

Schwarz mentioned the library’s various locations since 1916 before it finally settled into its current 17,722-square-foot home.

“Of course I’m biased, but our library has got to be one of the best libraries around here,” he said.

Councilmen , and were also in the audience, along with City Council candidates , and .

Schwarz concluded the evening by asking everyone to attend the “Design Camp Workshops” on Nov. 3 and 4 at the new recreation center, and help come up with ideas for the new facility. Attendees can view the property and talk to the property architects during the daylong events.

“It’s your rec center, and we value your input,” he said.
