Box Office Report: Muppets Can't Conquer Vampires

'Twilight' installment is weekend's top ticket-seller; 'Arthur Christmas' and 'Hugo' take fourth and fifth place.

The Muppets were unable to overtake the Twilight Saga phenomena, as Kermit and Miss Piggy opened in second place to the latest chapter of the teen vampire romance series, an industry analyst said Monday.

was the most popular movie at the North American ticket houses this holiday weekend, with a worldwide gross fast approaching a half-billion dollars. It was on track to sell an estimated $62.3 million worth of tickets in the U.S. and Canada during the five-day holiday weekend, according to studio estimates gathered by Hollywood.com.

That's good enough for a $221.3 million take over two weeks.

The Muppets opened to a $42 million gross for Disney, and Happy Feet Two was in third place with a $18.4 million weekend and $43.8 million total for two weeks.

An Arthur Christmas opened in fourth place with an estimated $17 million gate, and Hugo opened in the fifth spot, with a projected $15.4 million in sales.

Making up the remaining 10 most popular movies in the United States and Canada, as estimated by the studios and collated by Hollywood.com, were Jack and Jill ($14.1 million), Immortals ($15.3 million), Puss in Boots ($10.4 million),  ($10.2 million) and The Descendants ($9.2 million).
