Blog Post: The Legend of the Conejo Black Panther
Why are people seeing a black panther in the Conejo Valley?

Since the 1950s, stories have been told of a mysterious black panther in and around the hills of the Conejo Valley. The rumor says a wild panther escaped from the Jungleland compond years ago and continues to live off jack rabbits and stray cats. It has been seen even by Ventura County Sheriff's deputies!
In going over the records of Jungleland, there is an account of an escaped panther. He was on the loose for 48 hours before he was trapped and sent back to the wild animal park. Not one bit of evidence exists that an animal like that ever got away. So what could the sightings be? Oversized house cats? Some kind of mass hysteria?
Some have even suggested that Chumash Shaman could perhaps change themselves into large black creatures–maybe this is a Chumash spirit being? I have pondered this local mystery for some time and I might have a suggested solution to the case.

I had to ask myself–why would an African Black Panther escape? Are there any local felines that exist here in this place. Yes, mountain lions do inhabit our hills,as they have for centuries. I believe a local female cougar went into its breeding season. The caged panther caught her scent, motivating it to escape. He followed the smell and mated with the local cougar before it was caught and returned to its cage. The offspring produced by this union is the creature people have seen from time to time.
Maybe a whole family of black panthers live in the back country, inheriting the wily ways of the black panther and avoiding detection. If you have seen the Conejo Panther or have your own theory about this beast, please feel free to leave a comment.
