In
his lesser-known satiric masterwork, The
Doctor’s Dilemma, George Bernard Shaw savagely skewers the vanities and
vagaries of the medical profession—and this 1906 depiction of avaricious quacks
and unprincipled physicians still resonates with timely themes today. Classics
in the Park, which has been mounting summer performances of Shakespeare and
other classic works in Ventura and Los Angeles counties for many years,
presents this timeless work August 3 through 11, at the Hillcrest Center for
the Arts in Thousand Oaks.
Theplay concerns a newly knighted doctor who has developed a revolutionary cure for tuberculosis. When he is asked by a young woman to save her dying artist husband, the doctor must choose whether to expend his limited resources to save either this genius, if amoral, painter or an altruistic doctor friend. The decision is complicated when the doctor falls in love with the artist’s wife.
