Invisible Business | Yoga Upstairs, Therapy Services Plus

A holistic health clinic sits just downstairs from a yoga studio on Derry Avenue.

Eloise Buckner lives life on her own terms, dances to the beat of her own drummer, and provides accompaniment on her own piano. That may not be the typical description of a colon-hydro therapist, but that’s the beauty of her unique business, Therapy Services Plus in Agoura Hills.

Buckner Keeps It Real

At any given moment, Buckner, who is also a professional pianist, may break out in a rendition of “In the wee small hours of the morning,” while sitting at her office piano between cleansings.

After completing a degree in Biochemistry at UCLA, she worked as a studio musician and spent years on the road, before a serious car accident forced her to switch gears. With a science background, a love for things natural, and a nurturing personality, she gravitated toward a career in holistic health.

For the past 21 years, Buckner has been providing colon-cleansing therapy in an intimate, relaxed setting at 5308 Derry Ave., Suite K, as well as counseling her clients in proper nutrition. She is certified in both disciplines.

According to Buckner, benefits derived from the treatment include increased energy, improved circulation, decreased toxicity, weight loss, and a potentially stronger immune system. She also tries to help manage the side effects of medical treatment.

Although she originally worked alone, Buckner has since rented out space to other specialists, including a deep pressure neuromuscular massage therapist, a chiropractor, and a separate business called , which is appropriately located above the main floor.

Yoga Upstairs

Sri Hari Moss, a former reservations agent for Delta Airlines, lived for years in the Sai Anantam Ashram (spiritual community) of Triunfo Canyon. The stress of his job led him to yoga.

“I needed a release,” he said in an interview alongside his business partner Cara Sorkin in their studio. Sorkin discovered yoga while recuperating from an illness.

Moss knew Buckner for many years, met Sorkin while she was a client of the clinic, and joined force with her in business five years ago. There are now five teachers at Yoga Upstairs.

A 'Yoga Community'

“We are a yoga community,” Moss said, explaining the uniqueness of their approach. Class size is usually no more than 10 students, and every effort is made to comfort beginners with props, or individualized attention to ease discomfort.

“Yoga helps you get in touch with your inner consciousness and helps with breathing. It helps you find balance,” said Moss. Sorkin added: “Through this I gained my health. It continues to transform me.”

Although their “community” offers meditation circles, and a variety of workshops and potlucks, a person can take classes without any pressure to participate in the spiritual aspect, Moss said.

Benefitting From Yoga

“You don’t have to come with any set of skills, Yoga meets you where you are,” said Moss. “It’s easier to handle things that come up with equanimity and poise. You’re able to look at things differently."

Buckner loves their location in a business park off of Canwood Street. She does not plan to move, although she would love to expand within, and add modalities like homeopathic medicine and Chinese herbs. For now, they are all quite happy.

“We are an oasis in a crazy world,” Buckner said.
