'Love Resists' Workshop to Promote Social Action

"Love Resists," a progressive empowerment ant action workshop, will be presented on Saturday, Oct. 21 in Newbury Park.

The Conejo Valley Unitarian Universalist Fellowship will present "Love Resists," a progressive empowerment and action workshop, on Saturday, Oct. 21 from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the church sanctuary at 3327 Old Conejo Road in Newbury Park.

The aim of the workshop, to be led by the Rev. Kathleen McTigue, director of the Unitarian Universalist College of Social Justice, is to offer practical ways that congregations, organizations and individuals can make a difference in supporting human rights in today's charged and divisive political climate. The workshop will explore choosing priorities for action, partnering with grassroots groups, structuring efforts for maximum impact and sustainability, and how to speak from the grounding of progressive values.

"Love Resists" is a campaign organized by the Unitarian Universalist Association of congregations worldwide and the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee in the face of threats to immigrants, Muslims, people of color and the LGBTQ community. It opposes hate speech and the rise of efforts to limit voting and reproductive rights and access to healthcare, and it supports policies that address climate change.

The Unitarian Universalist College of Social Justice is an educational program to help members of the church and others work for justice in their communities. Before joining that effort, Rev. McTigue served for 25 years as a Unitarian Universalist minister to congregations, including 21 years at the Unitarian Society of New Haven, Conn. She said participants in the workshop will "see more clearly what we face, imagine more boldly the ways we can act, and live our values more radically and courageously on the side of justice."

The workshop will begin at 9:30 a.m. with a coffee gathering. The program will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and lunch will be provided. Child care is available if requested by Oct. 16 through the online registration portal. The workshop is open to all with a suggested donation of $10, but no one will be turned away for lack of funds.
