Navajo Rug & Jewelry Show Coming to Santa Monica Mountains Sept. 13-14

Hubbell's trader Edison Eskeets and master weaver Mary Henderson Begay will describe the rugs' history, symbolism, artistry and production.

From a press release:

The Santa Monica Mountains Interagency Visitor Center will host a Navajo rug and jewelry show, complete with artist talks and demonstrations, on September 13 and 14. Running from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day, the free event comes from Hubbell Trading Post, the oldest continuously operated trading post in the American Southwest.

With special rug talks at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., Hubbell’s trader Edison Eskeets and master weaver Mary Henderson Begay will describe the history, symbolism, artistry and production of the rugs and how to choose and care for them. Like the weavers themselves, no two rugs are alike, but each evokes a sense of place and incorporates traditional designs and colors.

Throughout the day, master weaver Mary Henderson Begay will demonstrate traditional weaving techniques. Mary was honored last year with the Arizona Indian Living Treasure Award in 2013. It takes a weaver 400 hours to produce a medium-sized rug from start to finish.

A pre-show presentation and sale with Edison Eskeets will take place at Satwiwa Native American Indian Culture Center in Newbury Park on Friday, September 12 from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Reservations for the Friday session are required: samo@wnpa.org or 805-370-2302.
