Singers, Dancers, Actors Wanted: LVUSD Benefit Show

DREAMERS is a collection of short musicals, films, & plays written by Las Virgenes Unified School District local celebrities.

AGOURA HILLS, CA – The Las Virgenes Unified School District will present its Fifth Annual Benefit Concert in celebration of the generosity of its donors, and in support of the creativity and spirit of the amazing students involved in the Performing Arts throughout the District, according to a LVUSD press release. The Benefit Concert will take place on Feb. 24, 2018 at the A­PAEC, the Performing Arts Education Center on the campus of Agoura High School.

This benefit puts a spotlight on the performing arts and educational experiences that LVUSD offers students and the community; it will also help generate funds in order to reach the $5 million goal to support the vision for these theaters as thriving performing arts hubs that reach, teach, challenge and inspire students and community members, the press release said.

“I am ecstatic at the opportunity to make my debut as a playwright in support of our amazing LVUSDPerforming Arts Programs,” said Superintendent Dr. Stepenosky, who wrote a play for the event. “We are continuously grateful that the community passed the bond that allowed us to build these state of the art Performing Arts Centers on our High School Campuses, and to continuously support our dreams for both theaters as a ‘beacon for the arts’ in our community. LVUSD’s annual benefit is a celebration of our many talented students, faculty,community members, and of course our wonderful Performing Arts Education Centers."

What is it?

DREAMERS is a collection of short musicals, films and plays written by LVUSD local celebrities
including Dr. Dan Stepenosky, LVUSD Superintendent of Schools; Cinco Paul, screenwriter of the
“Despicable Me” franchise, among other amazing films; LVUSD board member, Angela Cutbill; Joe
Hortua, NY and LA playwright and TV writer; among others. Directed by Sherri Parker Lee, Abigail
Herman, David Krassner, Katie Newcomer, Ray Saar, among others.

How to Audition

Auditions are open to every member of LVUSD including family, friends, students, and staff members. There will be seven short plays, musicals, and dance pieces written by LVUSD writers and directors.

Auditions for actors and singers will be held at The Performing Arts Education Center on the campus
of Agoura High School on Monday, Nov. 6 from 3 to 9 p.m. in the A­PAEC’s Black Box
Theater. Bring a prepared song (16 bars only) or a 30 second monologue or both.

Dancers are invited to attend an open call at the same location on Wednesday, Nov. 8 from 3
to 4 p.m. Wear clothes and shoes appropriate for dance.

“Audition for DREAMERS, the 2018 Beacon Benefit." Those who wish to audition may also show up and sign up for a spot at the APAEC Black Box in Agoura Hills on the appropriate day.

The Acts: Ballets, Plays, & Musicals

  • Dead Wait ­– a Play by Jake Marone
    • When Arthur, a recently deceased accountant, tries to make his way down the gangplank toward whatever afterlife lies in store for him, he’s challenged by Kyle, a surly teenage rocker nursing a dream of rock­ n' ­roll stardom cut short for no good reason. Will the Gate Agent prevail and get Arthur on his way?
  • Electra ETA –­ a Play by Liz Cangelosi & Angela Cutbill
    • A young girl named Millie wanders the airport with her stuffed bear, Fred, and meets three women, each one living a different life at a different time and traveling to a different destination. Over the course of the play, Millie visits 1937, 1977 and 2017, and learns what makes each of these women tick and ultimately decides on a destination for herself.
  • Food Courting ­– a Ballet, story by Cinco Paul
    • Joe Rodreguez’s Taco the Town restaurant is in a bitter war with Anna Chen’s Wok This Way to rule the Airport Food Court. When Joe and Anna’s children, Elena and David, fall in love and fly the coop, the feuding parents are forced to see their world in a new way, at least until Helga’s The Wiener Takes All German Eatery opens on the court and the battles resume.
  • George and Manny ­– a Play by Joe Hortua
    • Two men cross paths at LAX while waiting for their flights. When Manny, a bright, second ­generation Mexican­American political science major returning for classes at Berkeley, sits down next to George, a widowed retiree and Vietnam vet sporting a “Make America Great Again” trucker hat, who’s returning home to Missouri after helping his only son transition out of rehab, the brief connection between these two individuals allows them to put their suspicions about each other aside, if only for a moment.
  • Lost & Found –­ a Play with Dance by Dave Moorman
    • A woman contemplating turning her life upside down to become a professional waits for her flight next to a stranger who offers her some free advice on following your dreams. After she dances her way to a decision about what to do next, we learn the stranger is not at all who he seems.
  • Standing By ­– a Musical by Gilles Chiasson
    • Juliet just turned 18 and she’s bound and determined to fly across the country to convince Romeo, her camp counselor from last summer and first “real” boyfriend, to marry her. But first, she’s got to get a seat on the plane. Will Juliet’s number get called as the airline works its way down the standby list? Will she realize her dream of becoming a wife? Will she realize her dream of becoming a wife isn’t her only option?
