The Real Faces of Mental Illness
Two people will describe their struggles with mental illness in a program called In Our Own Voice on Friday, May 9 at 7:30 p.m. in Newbury Park.
The educational presentation by the National Alliance on Mental Illness Ventura County is designed to help the community gain a better understanding of people living with mental disorders. The speakers will address a Community Forum at the Conejo Valley Unitarian Universalist Fellowship at 3327 Old Conejo Road.
The audience will hear from people who have suffered from depression, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder or other severe mental illnesses. A short video will show other individuals talking about Dark Days, Acceptance, Treatment, Coping Skills, and Successes, Hopes and Dreams. The speakers will take questions from the audience after their presentation.

"I did not know people could be so severely disturbed and still recover before I heard the presentation, a student commented to NAMI. A nursing student said the program "Breaks the stereotype that clients with mental illness are goalless or not motivated."
The Community Forum is open to the public and free; donations will be accepted. For information, visit forum.cvuuf.org or call (805) 498-9401.
