VCPWA ensures community safety with disaster simulation training

Annual Storm Day 2019 training focuses on preparing for flooding due to a natural disaster

(VENTURA COUNTY, Calif.) – October 9, 2019 – While Ventura County’s weather patterns can be unpredictable, it is key to always be prepared when a natural disaster hits, such as a fire or a flood, especially when it comes to the survival of life and property. As a part of that preparation, the Ventura County Public Works Agency (VCPWA) conducted Storm Day, an annual disaster simulation drill, on Oct. 9, which focused on preparation for flooding stemming from a natural disaster and infrastructure damage.

This year’s annual Storm Day training mobilized Public Works crews to clear out the Milligan and Honda barrancas that were blocked by a fallen tree as well as vegetation. The exercise mobilized VCPWA to its emergency Field Operations Centers, Department Operations Centers, and Agency Operation Center, to test the agency’s emergency response plans, response times and processes. In addition, the agency tested its evaluation of information and communication procedures, and analyzed the efficiency of departments, to help identify any areas for improvement in the emergency response plans.

As first responders, VCPWA also works alongside the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department, the Ventura County Fire Department, and emergency medical personnel to provide critical infrastructure support and maintain public safety in the event of a natural disaster.

“In the event of a natural disaster, it’s our job as the first and last responders to assess the damage and work to make sure the area is safe again for the community,” explains Jeff Pratt, Director of VCPWA. “This work is imperative to lead the way in preparing not only ourselves but our processes so that we can protect our community in the event of a natural disaster.”
