ALAMEDA, CA — The popular free water shuttle, Woodstock, that connects people in Alameda to Jack London Square in Oakland, is out of service for the foreseeable future due to mechanical issues, city officials said on Wednesday.
The water shuttle is expected to be out of service until at least Tuesday, Aug. 18, Alameda city officials said.
"We are working as quickly as possible to resolve the issue," city officials said in a statement. "Replacement engines have been identified and will arrive in the coming days. Service will resume following installation and thorough testing."
City officials recommend that, in the meantime, travelers use the SF Bay Ferry's Alameda Short Hop or AC Transit Line 96 to get to and from the island.
The mechanical issues come just weeks after officials celebrated the shuttle's successful two-year phase. Officials will look to capitalize on that success as they go into a second phase where they'll plan for the shuttle's long-term future.
Officials said the shuttle has been reliable since its launch in July 2024, operating on 97% of its scheduled days.
In those two years, the 45-foot yellow shuttle has carried more than 251,000 passengers and 60,000 bicycles across the estuary for free, city officials said.
It has also expanded services from five to six days a week, increased weekly trips nby 84%, and had its daily ridership record broken in ay 2026, when 1,039 riders used the shuttle, according to city officials.
"During the coming year, the partners plan to conduct a long-term feasibility study to evaluate how a robust, reliable service could continue in the future, beyond the current two years of additional funding," officials said.
