After 20 Years, A Popular Oakland Soul Food Restaurant Is Closing: Reports

OAKLAND, CA — Another longtime Oakland restaurant is shutting down.

Home of Chicken and Waffles at 247 Fourth St. is closing after 20 years, according to a KTVU report. The beloved restaurant will serve its last dish on Aug. 31, according to a San Francisco Chronicle report.

The restaurant has attracted politicians over the years, including Hillary Clinton and Kamala Harris, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

The restaurant's founder, Derreck Johnson, told KTVU that he opened the restaurant because he wanted to build a place where community members could "come home to good food and people."

"Food brings folks together, no matter who they are or where they're from," Johnson says on the Home of Chicken and Waffles website. "It's a way of showing you care, a love language passed down from generation to generation. When you cook for someone, you're not just feeding them, you're creating memories that'll stick with them forever."

It's not clear why Johnson decided to close. Home of Chicken and Waffles joins a growing list of Oakland eateries that have closed this year.

Plank, a longtime staple at Jack London Square, closed on Aug. 2.

Pucquio, a popular Peruvian restaurant, abruptly closed its doors on Friday, after thirteen years in Oakland.

Wood Tavern, a beloved destination brasserie in Oakland's Rockridge neighborhood, announced last month that it will be closing at the end of the year.
