Free Alameda Water Shuttle Could Return Friday After Experiencing Engine Issues

ALAMEDA, CA — The Oakland Alameda Water Shuttle, Woodstock, is expected to be back in service on Friday, officials said.

The 31-passenger pontoon boat suffered multiple engine failures last week, rendering it inoperable, Alameda city officials said in a press release on Monday.

Officials last week said the boat would be out at least until Tuesday as the city awaits the arrival of new engines. On Monday, officials said the engines were on their way to the Bay Area and that service would resume "following installation and thorough testing."

"We know this has been a big disruption for the many people who rely on the Water Shuttle," officials said. "Please know that we are working as quickly as possible to resolve the issue."

City officials recommend that, in the meantime, travelers use the SF Bay Ferry's Alameda Short Hop or AC Transit Line 96 to get to and from the island.

The mechanical issues come just weeks after officials celebrated the shuttle's successful two-year phase. Officials will look to capitalize on that success as they go into a second phase where they'll plan for the shuttle's long-term future.

Officials said the shuttle has been reliable since its launch in July 2024, operating on 97% of its scheduled days.

In those two years, the 45-foot yellow shuttle has carried more than 251,000 passengers and 60,000 bicycles across the estuary for free, city officials said.
