'We Wish It Weren't So:' Admiral Maltings In Alameda To Close

ALAMEDA, CA — Mark those calendars, as the last day to put back a cold one at Admiral Maltings in Alameda nears.

The beloved beer joint that pioneered craft malthouse is closing Friday. The Rake, a pub inside the malthouse, will serve its last beer on Sunday, Oct. 18.

"We've treasured the connections and community we've created with California farmers, the breweries and distilleries we've worked with, and everyone who helped us revive and innovate the craft of floor-malting," Admiral Maltings said in a statement on social media Tuesday. "Despite our best efforts, we couldn't make and sell malt economically."

The company said it tried to keep it going, but no longer had the resources needed to keep everything afloat.

"We wish it weren't so," the company said on social media. "We've never worked harder on anything.⁠"

Ron Silberstein of ThirstyBear Organic Brewery, Dave McLean of Magnolia Brewing Company and Curtis Davenport, who has an extensive background in organic farming and small-batch malting, founded Admiral Maltings in 2017.

It served the Alameda community for 8 years and supported local farmers, from whom they sourced ingredients.

"While It's devastating to see what we all built together disappear, we are honored to have played a role in the craft beer scene both locally here in Northern California, on a national and even international level," according to Admiral Maltings.
