📰 News we're reading

• Rarely-affected Bay Area regions could see flooding during winter storms (newsbreak.com) — Alameda's shoreline, Naval Air Station area, and Gateway Ferry Terminal are highlighted as key trouble spots if this winter's storms coincide with king tides, potentially previewing three feet or more of future flooding. Regional planners warn that by later this century, such conditions could become routine, disrupting jobs, housing, transit, and habitats across the Bay, so Alameda residents should watch this winter's tides closely.

• Legislation – Senator Jesse Arreguín, CA Senate District 7 (ca.gov) — New state laws backed by Sen. Jesse Arreguín will directly affect Alameda residents through changes to Alameda Health System's governance, potentially improving oversight of local public hospitals. Other measures address AC Transit labor disputes, illegal dumping, abandoned vehicles, election protections, and housing and fire-safety rules, shaping everything from regional transit funding to how local governments tackle homelessness and density bonuses.

• Bay Area county wants to help older adults age in place — by selling their homes (sfchronicle.com) — Alameda County is designing a program to help older homeowners build backyard ADUs, move into them, then split their lots and sell their original homes to fund construction and retirement. Using recent California laws, the pilot aims to let seniors age in place while opening more housing for families, with outreach expected to begin in early 2027.
