9/11 Remembered Across Orange County: Los Alamitos

The 15th Annual Day of Remembrance is taking place across Orange County this Sunday, Sept. 11, 2016. Find out where Los Alamitos residents

LOS ALAMITOS, CA — The bells of the San Juan Capistrano cathedral will chime this Sunday for the fifteenth annual remembrance of 9/11. The attack on the United States, through the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and the fields of Pennsylvania will be commemorated across Orange County.

Los Alamitos:

A September 11th Day of Remembrance will take place at the Los Alamitos Fire Station, #23462 Green Ave. in Los Alamitos. From 8:30 a.m. to 9 a.m.

Huntington Beach:
The city unveils a $200,000 monument, featuring two pieces of steel recovered from Ground Zero and two 9.5-foot-tall black granite pillars, dedicated to the first responders and victims of the attacks at the Civic Center Plaza, 2000 Main St. Several New York police officers will participate in the 2 to 4 p.m. ceremony and there will be a county air support flyover, memorial music and a posting of a One World Trade Center Flag. American Legion Post 133 is holding its Patriots Day celebration at 6 p.m. at the Huntington Beach Pier Plaza, 325 Pacific Coast Highway. The Huntington Beach Police and Fire departments will participate, there will be a three-volley rifle salute, Taps and Amazing Grace will be played, there will be flyover and speakers. Laguna Beach:
9/11 Pacific Coast Triathlon
This Sunday, September 11, 2016, the 19th Annual Kiwanis Pacific Coast (PC) Triathlon‱Duathlon will honor the brave men and women who gave their lives on that sad day. The event race directors, Scott and Kari Davis, will be presenting two beautiful commemorative medals to the City of Newport Beach Mayor Diane Dixon.
The Kiwanis Pacific Coast Triathlon‱Duathlon is a sprint distance triathlon and duathlon. The triathlon event is a 750m swim, 20k bike and 5k run. The duathlon event is a 1.5k run, 20k bike and a 5k run. The race is being held at Crystal Cove State Park this Sunday, September 11, 2016. Also in Laguna Beach:
9/11 Memorial Service - Members of the City’s Fire, Marine Safety and Police Departments will participate in a memorial service honoring the 15th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on our Country. The service will be held at Heisler Park at the City’s 9/11 memorial art work “Semper Memento.” The ceremony is organized by the Orange County Fire Chiefs Association and is timed to coincide with the actual times the attack, beginning at 8:46 a.m. The public is invited to attend this brief service honoring the 2,996 lives that were lost, including 343 New York City Firefighters, 37 Police Officers of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, and 23 New York City Police Officers.

Newport Beach Area:
Pretend City Children’s Museum is holding activities throughout the day for children to show their patriotism and learn more about Sept. 11. Regular admission, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 29 Hubble. Information:pretendcity.org

Mission Viejo:
Boy Scout Troop 661 will participate in a traditional flag-retirement ceremony on Patriot Day to commemorate the 15th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. The ceremony is 11 a.m. Sunday in the Kershaw Garden at the Mission Viejo Civic Center, 200 Civic Center. Information: 949-470-3061.

Rancho Santa Margarita:
The city’s ceremony will take place 4-6 p.m. Sunday at the Civic Plaza, 22112 El Paseo. The event will honor those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice during the war on terrorism. Guest speakers include Mayor Tony Beall, Tom Frost and a Marine 2/5 Commanding Officer. Information: cityofrsm.org.

Lake Forest:
The Lake Forest Fire and Police Departments will perform a Remembrance Ceremony on Sunday, September 11, 2011, from 9 a.m. until 9:30a.m. The ceremony will commemorate fallen comrades and civilians on the 15th anniversary of the terrorist attacks the United States suffered on September 11, 2001. The ceremony will take place in Market Square located off Western Avenue north of Deerpath in Lake Forest. The public is welcome to attend.

The 9/11 Community Remembrance will provide an opportunity for the fire & police departments and community members to recognize the many acts of heroism, bravery and generosity, which reflect back so strongly on all Americans since that day. This ceremony will be a salute to community leaders, civic officials, military personnel, firefighters, law enforcement, public works, park district, and citizens alike.

Irvine:
OCFA Commemorates the 15th Anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks at the OCFA headquarters and all fire stations. A moment of silence, and speakers at the Irvine facility: 1 Fire Authority Road in Irvine, at the Orange County Memorial at the Main Entrance. Speakers include: OCFA Fire Chief Jeff Bowman, OCFA Board Chair Gene Hernandez, OCFA Board Vice-Chair Beth Swift, and Third Dist. OC Supervisor and Board Director Todd Spitzer. 8:50 a.m.

Laguna Niguel Area:

A memorial ride by motorcyclists will travel starting at 9:30 a.m. from Cook’s Corner to Paul’s Cocktails in Orange and The Ranch in Ladera Ranch, and back to Cook’s Corner.

The historic bells of the San Juan Capistrano church will toll for the 9/11 Memorial September 11 @ 10:00 am - 10:15 am
