Local Voices: Knocking Paws

Coyote mating seen is underway.

I haven't seen any coyotes for a while so I decided to do a little investigation.  Months ago, Laguna Woods undertook the killing of coyotes.  This was prompted by attacks on small pets being walked by their owners, which the coyotes mistook for snacks on a rope.

I began to see a return of the coyote population during pre-dawn runs.  However, they've seemingly disappeared as of late.  It turns out they've been busy.  This is the time of year when coyotes mate.

The female coyote takes approximately two months to give birth.  After about 20 days, the pups will emerge from the den.  Both parents feed the pups with regurgitated food.  The male coyotes will leave the pack in roughly six months and the females will stay.

I have an appreciation for wildlife that is able to survive and even thrive among people.  The coyote has been able to hold its own.

So try to take comfort in knowing that as we go about our daily lives, somewhere in a nearby canyon, two coyotes have put on some Kenny G and are doing their best to maintain the survival of their species.
