Local Voices: Letting Go of Anger

Is anger holding you back?

We all have life stressors.  Those things that seem to make our lives more difficult than it needs to be.  Some are within our control but many aren't.  One of the side effects of these stressors is to become angry.  Learning to let go of that anger isn't always easy but it can be rewarding.  After all, hanging on to anger only empowers whatever it is that is upsetting you.  Letting go puts you back in charge.

According to WebMD, anger can lead to heart disease, digestive problems and skin disorders.  It can also damage relationships.  I'm a big believer that anger pollutes the soul.  Of course, we all get angry and controlling it can sometimes be difficult.  But at the end of the day, it's about the quality of life you want to enjoy.

I use imagry.  It might sound cliche' to say "think happy thoughts" but imagry has been used successfully in sports psychology and in the treatment of health disorders.  Postive thinking can get you back on track.

Imagry works great with positive self talk.  Talk yourself out of whatever has you upset.  Put yourself back in control.

Go to a positive place.  There is a ridgeline here in Aliso Viejo I like to go to watch the sunrise.  It clears my head and helps me start the day off right.  During the day, I might refer to a bible devotional.  It's a great way to recalibrate.
