The Laguna Playhouse

Featuring Opera Laguna’s Arnold and Oriana Geiss and the Laguna Beach Chamber Singers.

LAGUNA BEACH, Calif. – September 2026 – The Laguna Community Concert Band presents “A Grand Afternoon of Opera and Broadway” On Sunday, October 11, at 2 p.m. at the Laguna Playhouse, featuring a special collaboration with Opera Laguna’s Arnold and Oriana Geiss and the Laguna Beach Chamber Singers under the direction of Dr. Ryan Brown.
Together, these talented and dedicated Laguna Beach arts organizations will perform an afternoon of well-known operatic and musical theater music. The performance celebrates the joy of bringing different musical worlds together—concert band, opera, and choral singing—creating an experience that allows artists and audiences alike to discover new connections.
The program moves from the grandeur and drama of opera to the storytelling power of Broadway, featuring music that captures passion, romance, celebration, conflict, and hope. Highlights include Verdi’s “Triumphal March” from Aida, Bizet’s vibrant ** Carmen Suite**, Saint-Saëns’ exhilarating ** Bacchanale from Samson and Delilah**, and Verdi’s stirring “Anvil Chorus” from Il Trovatore featuring the Laguna Beach Chamber Singers.
Opera Laguna’s Arnold and Oriana Geiss will bring the passion, romance, and exuberance of Italian opera to the stage with Verdi’s “Sempre Libera”and “Brindisi from La Traviata—a sparkling champagne toast filled with celebration, flirtation, and the joy of living—performed with the full ensemble of musicians and singers.
The second half explores some of musical theater’s most unforgettable stories through selections from Rodgers and Hammerstein, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera. These works invite audiences into worlds of discovery, passion, struggle, compassion, and hope, reminding us why great theater music continues to resonate across generations.
The collaboration reaches its fullest expression as the Concert Band, Opera Laguna, and the Laguna Beach Chamber Singers join together on a medley of music from Schönberg’s Les Misérables, combining instrumental power, operatic artistry, and choral richness.
“I am so excited about this collaboration,” said Jennifer Baker, Music Director of the Laguna Community Concert Band. “Our community is filled with talented artists and musicians. Bringing these groups together creates a unique opportunity to make music while inviting our audiences to discover something new. Those who come for opera may discover the depth and versatility of the concert band. And our band audiences will be moved by the power of opera and the beauty of choral music, especially in this unique setting.
“Ultimately, this is about connection—creating opportunities for people who love different musical traditions to meet each other and find common ground. It is a chance to celebrate the incredible artistic talent in our community and experience the magic that happens when we make and share music together.” A three time winner of the Laguna Beach Arts Alliance Collaboration award, the concert reflects the Laguna Community Concert Band’s ongoing commitment to build connections throughout the community. As Laguna Beach approaches its Centennial in 2027, the Band is creating new opportunities to connect the city’s many artists, musicians, and audiences—celebrating the creative community that has helped shape Laguna Beach for generations.
Now in its 27th season, the Laguna Community Concert Band is a volunteer nonprofit dedicated to enriching Laguna Beach through free live performances, music education, and community partnerships. The organization includes a 50-piece Concert Band and an 18-piece Jazz Band, presenting more than 25 performances each year throughout the community.
From Festival of Arts concerts and holiday celebrations to educational programs and collaborations with local arts organizations, the Laguna Community Concert Band continues its mission of making live music accessible to everyone and welcoming audiences of all ages.

“The world’s only period‑instrument rock band.” – San Francisco Classical Voice (on Ruckus)
Taking Bach out of the museum and infusing his music with equal parts tradition, funk, whimsy, and fun, Emi Ferguson and Ruckus take you on a wild romp through some of Bach’s most playful and transcendent works. With ever evolving arrangements of Bach’s Flute Sonatas and Keyboard Preludes, orchestrated for baroque flute and the forces of Ruckus that include theorbos, baroque guitars, baroque bassoon, cello, viola da gamba, harpsichord, organ, bass, and even banjo.
Ruckus, the super-powered baroque rhythm section, explodes Bach’s single bass line into a rainbow of textures and colors, continually shifting like light over the landscape as Ferguson’s flute lines dance above. Contrasting the three flute sonatas on the album are new arrangements of a variety of Bach’s keyboard preludes, with selections ranging from the beloved Well Tempered Clavier to alternate movements from keyboard suites that are rarely performed.
RUCKUS - Chamber Ensemble
Ruckus is a shapeshifting, collaborative baroque ensemble with a visceral and playful approach to early music. Described as “the world’s only period-instrument rock band” (San Francisco Classical Voice), Ruckus’ core is a continuo group, the baroque equivalent of a jazz rhythm section: guitars, keyboards, cello, bassoon and bass. The NYC-based ensemble aims to fuse the early-music movement’s questing, creative spirit with the grit, groove and jangle of American roots music, creating a unique sound of “rough-edged intensity” (New Yorker) that’s “achingly delicate one moment, incisive and punchy the next” (New York Times). The group’s members are among the most creative and virtuosic performers in North American early music.
EMI FERGUSON - Flute
Emi Ferguson is on a mission to shake up classical music. Whether playing modern or historical flutes, singing, composing, or speaking about music, she brings centuries of music to life with an adventurous spirit and a fresh perspective. Her performances, ranging from Baroque masterpieces to brand-new commissions are anything but predictable, blending historical performance with a fearless, modern edge.
A 2023 recipient of the Avery Fisher Career Grant, Emi thrives as both a soloist and a collaborator, appearing at major festivals and concert halls around the world. She performs regularly with AMOC*, Ruckus, the New York New Music Ensemble, the Handel and Haydn Society (where she is principal flute), and the Manhattan Chamber Players. As music director of Camerata Pacifica Baroque, she curates bold, genre-defying programs that highlight the Baroque for Southern California chamber music audiences.

MAVIS STAPLES
Grim days call for fierce love. And Mavis Staples, one of the most enduring figures in American music, is laying it down. Sad and Beautiful World is the fifteenth solo album from a national treasure and multigenerational talent. On her new record, Mavis stands side by side with us in the face of dangers she knows all too well, at a time when more and more people have reason to wonder who and what could be lost.
Sad and Beautiful World was produced by Brad Cook, known for his work with Bon Iver, Waxahatchee, and Iron and Wine, among other artists. The record spans seven decades of the American songbook — a range nearly as vast as Mavis’ career — and includes reinventions of timeless songs as well as original music.
Now 86, Mavis has been performing since the age of eight. After starting out with her father Roebuck “Pops” Staples, sisters Cleotha and Yvonne, and brother Pervis in the Staple Singers more than seventy years ago, she’s the lone surviving member of the group, still carrying her family’s gifts and knowledge with her as a living heritage.
Inducted into several halls of fame (blues, rock, and gospel), a Kennedy Center Honoree, a winner of multiple Grammys (including a Lifetime Achievement award), Mavis is our musical history. She’s collaborated with nearly every major figure of her era(s), from Dylan to Prince, Aretha, and Willie — not to mention countless stars from subsequent generations.
Sad and Beautiful World includes cameos by artists who have become part of Mavis’ world, many of whom are legends in their own right. Buddy Guy, Bonnie Raitt, Jeff Tweedy, Derek Trucks, Katie Crutchfield, MJ Lenderman, Justin Vernon, and others shine a light on her, while Mavis does what only she can do. Embracing vulnerability, she sings close and deep here, drawing the listener into a circle filled with her unforgettable presence.
The first track recorded for the album, “Human Mind,” was written for and about Mavis by Hozier and Allison Russell. Paying tribute to the complexity of life, Mavis expresses faith in humanity: “Even in these days, I find / this far down the line, / I find good in it sometimes.” That magical last word — “sometimes” — shows her choosing hope, even with the disappointments that experience has brought.
Her take on Tom Waits’ “Chicago” flaunts her vocal prowess, opening the album with a high-octane journey North that her family actually made—a dream of a future, but one offering no guarantees. Guitar riffs from Buddy Guy and Derek Trucks layer the song with a musical legacy that rose out of that same migration, a migration that Guy himself also lived.
These are love songs for tough times. The title track, written by Mark Linkous (a.k.a. Sparklehorse), with its funeral-march rhythm and spare lyrics, finds beauty even in the midst of grief over everything that’s been lost. Mavis turns to Gillian Welch’s “Hard Times” to testify that “we’re gonna make it yet.”
On Kevin Morby’s “Beautiful Strangers,” she reminds those in danger, “If you ever hear the gunshot… think of mother / I am a rock.” Released over the summer, her version of Frank Ocean’s “Godspeed,” delivers a staggering benediction to those who stumble: “There will be mountains you won’t move. / I’ll always be there for you.”
“We Got To Have Peace”, written by Curtis Mayfield, her friend and longtime collaborator, is framed by Mavis as a plea and a psalm. Yet her take on Leonard Cohen’s “Anthem” carries a quiet fury that suggests choosing peace shouldn’t be mistaken for submission.
The album closes on two reflective notes. Mavis sings “Satisfied Mind,” a song made famous by Porter Wagoner, and delivers it from the perspective of a long life well lived, reminding listeners that fleeting glory makes for shallow victory. And with “Everybody Needs Love,” Mavis finishes with the joy she insists on spreading, reminding us that she’s here, that we cannot go it alone, and that we don’t have to.
It’s impossible to talk to Mavis’ collaborators without them bringing up the strength of her spirit and her generosity, growing animated over how much her songs mean to them. Allison Russell described hearing the Staple Singers as a preteen and finding out that Mavis had played a key part in the civil rights movement as a young woman.
Mavis Staples is more than a legendary voice—she is a living piece of music history. For more than 70 years, her powerful voice has carried messages of love, hope, compassion, and resilience. From performing alongside the Staple Singers during the Civil Rights Movement to continuing to inspire audiences today, Mavis has used music to bring people together and stand for something greater.
Now, at 85, she continues to make music and history, reminding us that it’s never too late to keep sharing your voice, your story, and your hope. Come visit an unforgettable spirit that keeps inspiring entire generations and the ones next to come.
