Girl Scouts Honors Outstanding Volunteers and Girls

ALISO VIEJO RESIDENTS HONORED BY GIRL SCOUTS OF ORANGE COUNTY AT APPRECIATION LUNCHEON

On Sunday, June 4th Girl Scouts of Orange County and its Board of Directors came together with over 700 guests to celebrate the incredible accomplishments of Girl Scouts and the adult volunteers who support them at the Celebrate! Recognition luncheon at the Disneyland Hotel. The following Aliso Viejo residents received prestigious awards during the event.

18-year-old Girl Scout Ambassador Gabriella Hernandez from Troop 734 was nominated by Girl Scouts of Orange County to be considered for Girl Scouts of the USA’s prestigious National Young Women of Distinction Award. For her Girl Scout Gold Award project, Gabriella created a “Break the Silence” club at her high school and partnered with Laura’s House, a local domestic violence shelter, to teach her peers about the importance of healthy relationships and give them tools to protect themselves and their loved ones from domestic violence and teen dating abuse. Gabby chose this project because of her own experience in an abusive home. She says “I found an inner strength I didn’t think I had and gained new skills to help me heal and the confidence to share my story to help others.” Award recipients will be selected by GSUSA in July and will receive training in public speaking, recognition at the G.I.R.L. convention in Columbus, Ohio, and a $15,000 academic scholarship.

2017 Appreciation Pin Recipients: Sandra McMasters, Kathryn Rodriguez, Laura Otero, Karen Pione, and Elaine Murphy.

Volunteer Sandra McMasters was awarded the Appreciation Pin, a national award approved by the council’s board of directors, which is given to volunteers in recognition of their outstanding service. Sandra engages girls in the girl-led process of Girl Scouts and coordinated two new and very successful Aliso Viejo Girl Scout events: Camporee and Trunk or Treat, which have engaged and strengthened the bond of participating girls.

Reflecting on the award recipients, Girl Scouts of Orange County CEO Nancy Nygren shared her gratitude. “I am very proud to take part in this celebration, honoring some of the hardest working, most dedicated volunteers any organization could have. Together, we are educating our communities about the importance and relevancy of the Girl Scout Leadership Development Experience while changing thousands of girls’ lives for the better.”
