Haircuts for Hope

Tribeca Salon aims to raise $10,000 for Tustin homeless shelter.

Tim Telles, owner of Tribeca Salon in Aliso Viejo, is keeping his operation open on  Sunday—an unusual day to be open for most salons—to raise money for the Village for Hope in Tustin, one of four homeless shelters that make up Orange County Rescue Mission. Telles hopes to raise $10,000.

The salon, at 6 Journey, Suite 155, is offering $50 haircuts and $20 eyebrow threading to raise the money.

Telles regularly cuts hair at the Village for Hope, averaging about seven days per month. The Village has a four-chair salon that he would like to see staffed three days a week.

"We've been blessed," Telles said. "I can always give my time, but I can't always give my money. I'm so appreciative, so it's a no brainer for me."

This is the second year the Tribeca Salon has held the Cut-a-Thon. Last year's event raised $3,000, Telles said.

He said he wants to give to the Village of Hope, because with the poor economy, "it could have been me and my wife being homeless and losing our job. It could be anybody. We're fortunate enough to work and keep working."

Sunday's Cut-a-Thon will include a raffle and a silent auction, balloons and photo booths for children. In addition, the salon will sell baskets of hair-care and tanning products. Candles will also be sold. A band and a DJ will also be on site.

As of Wednesday, Telles had about 20 appointments booked, but he's hoping for about 200.

"We still have plenty of room, and people can walk in,"he said. "We're not going to turn anybody away."
