Kumon Center Helps Fund Child Literacy

Kumon Learning Center of Aliso Viejo will make a donation to the nonprofit Reading is Fundamental for each new March enrollment.

The Kumon Learning Centers of North America have teamed up with Reading is Fundamental, the nation’s largest children’s literacy nonprofit, to raise money for children’s literacy programs.

in Aliso Viejo hosted an open house to raise awareness for children’s literacy on Saturday in observance of famed author Dr. Seuss’ birthday. For every new enrollment during March, Kumon of Aliso Viejo will donate four children’s books or the equivalent dollar amount to help fund children’s literacy programs.

Kumon hosted its open house after Saturday morning learning sessions. The event featured live book readings, literacy games and a prize drawing.

Kumon’s approach toward literacy and other academic skills is to make it interesting for children so self-enrichment becomes a type of hobby, rather than an obligation. This is where Kumon believes its program stands apart from traditional tutoring programs.

“Tutoring can help you get past a problem you are having now, but if you don’t have a foundation of good study habits, the problem may come up again in other areas,” said Angel Ko, owner of Kumon in Aliso Viejo.

Ko first discovered Kumon Learning Centers while looking into programs for her own children, Aaron and Avis. Impressed by what the program at Kumon did for her kids and looking for a new career path, Ko left her job in computer science and opened Aliso Viejo Kumon in April 2004.

“My job wasn’t very fulfilling and I was tired of being in a cubicle. I wanted something more meaningful as a career. This gives me a chance to help children develop their full potential. It’s very rewarding,” said Ko.
