Man Dies in Crash off 5 Freeway, But Nobody Witnessed It

A 26-year-old man died when his car swerved off the freeway in San Juan Capistrano, hitting a tree.

No one saw it happen, but a 26-year-old man was killed at about 12:30 a.m. today as his car swerved off the southbound 5 Freeway in San Juan Capistrano and crashed into a tree.

California Highway Patrol officers came across the wreck around 3:40 a.m. west of the freeway, just north of Junipero Serra Road, an officer reported. It was not known when the crash happened, as it was not called in by any witness.

Raymundo Santa Maria-Martinez was declared dead at the scene. No hometown was listed by the CHP or coroner.

The coroner’s office placed his time of death around 12:30 a.m.

Santa Maria-Martinez had been driving at an unknown rate of speed, and apparently swerved to the right and off the freeway for an as-yet unknown reason, Mendoza said.
