Parent-Teacher Conference Time Is Here
Answers to your frequently asked parent-teacher conference questions.
At elementary schools throughout our district, parents and teachers are preparing for spring parent-teacher conferences. Here are some questions and answers for parents.
Am I required to attend this parent-teacher conference? No, it is optional, based on need. If the teacher is requesting a conference, you should attend; he or she has something important to discuss with you regarding your child’s progress. If the teacher is not requesting a conference, then you may choose to schedule a conference if you feel it is needed or if you just want to be assured that your child is progressing at the rate he or she should be.
I do not have day care. Can I bring my child to the conference? Unless the teacher has specifically told you otherwise, the conference is for adults only. It is best to find responsible child care for your youngster so you can have an honest and open conversation with the teacher.

What should I bring to the conference? Your child’s report card and test scores (if you have recently received these; some teachers prefer to hand them to you during the conference). Also bring any questions that you have regarding your child’s progress.
Can I request a favorite teacher for next year? Assigning children to a classroom is a complicated process, and many factors affect the decision for placement. It is impossible for a teacher to make a promise about specific placement, so it is best not to ask for something the teacher cannot provide.

There is a specific child I do not want my child to be with next year. What should I do about that? It is acceptable to request that your child is not placed in the same classroom with another student. We cannot promise the best outcome, but we can certainly try our best to accommodate you.
I am worried about asking my boss for time off to attend the conference. Most employers are more reasonable about this than you may realize. Please do ask; the answer may surprise you. If it turns out that it is absolutely impossible to take the time off, ask the teacher if you can meet before school or as late as possible in the day. If that does not work, request a telephone conference. Most teachers are more than willing to contact you at work or at home in the evening by telephone.
