Soka Concert Rehearsal Raises Funds for Relief Efforts in Japan
Soka University raises $4,576 during tsunami relief open rehearsal.
Soka University opened the doors to its new performing arts center to test the building's acoustics and raise money for relief efforts in Japan.
Hawaiian musicians George Kuo, Aaron Mahi and Martin Pahinui tested the acoustics for the center's first live performance tonight during Soka's Hawaiian Luau.
"We're not officially open yet because there's still some things left to do," said David Palmer, general manager of the performing arts center. "Our first official performance will be in October."

The public was invited to Thursday's open rehearsal for the cost of a donation to the American Red Cross. The concert raised $4,575.76 for Japan Tsunami Relief—$310 of that total came from CD sales donation from the Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar Band Trio.

The night began with a test of the building's natural acoustics with no amplification or modifications. The music was crisp and clear, but the audience in the back had a hard time hearing.
Then Palmer turned on the amplification. The music was easier to hear, but the vocals were still too loud compared with the instruments.
Next, Palmer revealed the "magic box," which allows him to alter settings, enhancing the acoustics inside center, which can seat nearly 1,000 people.
"Give it 2½ minutes and you'll hear the difference," he said. "Talk amongst yourselves until then."
Stephanie Landman, who sat in the back row, lower section of the center, said the difference in sound was outstanding.
"I thought the sound was wonderful to begin with," she said. "Once they turned the acoustics on, it sounded 100 percent better. It was incredible."
Aaron Mahi, one of the performers, also commented:
"You are really blessed with a beautiful hall here," he said. "Usually it takes us a lot longer for sound checks, but we're an easy group."
