Altadena Man Killed in Hiking Fall

ALTADENA, CA -- Authorities Thursday identified a 71-year-old man who died when he fell off the side of a trail while hiking near Altadena.

The Los Angeles County Fire Department was requested just before 10 p.m. Wednesday for a rescue of a hiker who fell at least 10 feet over the side of the Sam Merrill Trail, according to Dispatch Supervisor Miguel Ornelas.

Lee Tracy of Altadena died at the scene, the coroner's office reported. An autopsy was pending to determine the cause of death.

Tracy apparently was hiking with a friend when he tripped and fell, said Lt. Irma Chevalier of the Sheriff's Altadena Station. His friend notified authorities, she said.
