At the Friends’ April 25th Board meeting we discussed the Library’s greatest needs during this period of social distancing. We agreed to allow the Library to use our annual donation flexibly as needed, such as to purchase more tablets and laptops or wifi “hot spots” that can be checked out to provide users with home internet. We also expressed our gratitude for the Library’s leadership in providing our community with vital information and support via the http://altadenanews.org/ website, Altadena Connections emails, as well as virtual materials, programming, and events.

On that note, April 26th saw the Altadena Library’s very first virtual “Poetry and Cookies” celebration. Over 80 participants came together online to share poetry and music, including the passing of virtual laurels to the Library’s new Poets Laureate. The Friends applaud the outgoing Poets Laureate, Hazel Clayton Harrison and Teresa Mei Chuc, for all their hard work publishing the 2020 Altadena Literary Review and for coordinating a fantastic event with the Library’s Chloé Cavelier.

We are delighted to announce that the Friends will also be going ahead with our Annual Meeting in virtual format. On Saturday June 6th at 1pm, author Tim DeRoche and retired State Senator and education reform advocate Gloria Romero will discuss Tim’s upcoming book “A Fine Line: How Most American Kids Are Kept Out of the Best Public Schools” which looks at the surprising parallels between school districting policies and old redlining practices. They will also talk about how the resulting inequities are impacting kids’ education during the current crisis. Details of how to attend the meeting will be posted on the Library’s events calendar and on the Friends web page soon: http://altadenalibrary.org/friends

Finally, the Friends are planning a “Virtual Book Pitch Party” for early July. The idea? Pitch a book you love to the rest of the crowd in three minutes and win a prize! We’ll be confirming the date and posting a sign-up page very soon.
