📰 News we're reading

1. Vector District Sets Overnight Mosquito Treatments for Part of Altadena Oct. 7–8 (pasadenanow.com) — If you live in Altadena between Glenrose and Marengo, from Mariposa down to Woodbury, expect overnight mosquito treatments from midnight to 5:30 a.m. on October 7 and 8. Crews will spray AquaDUET for adult mosquitoes and VectoBac for larvae in local water sources after higher‑than‑usual West Nile virus activity. Officials also urge residents across Altadena to dump standing water and use effective repellents.

2. Calif. Law Aims to Stop 'Predatory' Developers Moving In After Wildfires (sej.org) — Altadena homeowners rebuilding after the Eaton Fire are now shielded by a new state law, the Keep Altadena Land in Altadena Hands Act, aimed at curbing aggressive developer purchases of burned lots. While as many as 200 to 300 new structures have already been permitted, the measure is designed to slow further speculative building and give fire‑affected residents a fairer chance to stay in their neighborhood.

3. Chaos, Missteps, Command Snafus at Palisades, Eaton Fires Found During UL FSRI Probe (firehouse.com) — Residents of west Altadena are at the center of a new independent report that details how chaotic command decisions and delayed evacuation alerts contributed to the Eaton fire's devastating toll in their neighborhoods. Investigators found key 911 reports and on‑scene observations never reached incident commanders, leaving west Altadena largely unprotected for hours as the fire advanced. The report urges major changes in communication, evacuation planning, and wildfire monitoring across Los Angeles County.

4. Local Service Clubs Offer 'Join and Thrive!' for Residents to Find Their Community at a Joining Fair (pasadenanow.com) — Altadena residents are invited to a free Oct. 8 "Join and Thrive!" film screening and service-club fair in nearby Pasadena, where dozens of local groups will be recruiting new members. Organizers highlight how Altadena-Pasadena bonds, especially after the Eaton Fire and projects like rebuilding Farnsworth Park's amphitheater, show the power of civic clubs to strengthen community connections.
