Today's riddle: How do billboards talk? 🤔 (Answer below!)
1. County Planners to Take Altadena Feedback on Zoning, Rebuilding Rules at Listening Session (pasadenanow.com) — Altadena residents are invited to a county-led listening session on Oct. 17 to weigh in on local zoning rules and post‑Eaton Fire rebuilding policies at the Collaboratory. County planners will explain the Altadena Community Standards District, disaster recovery rules, and design standards, then break into small groups for feedback. Interpretation in Spanish, Mandarin, and Cantonese will be available with RSVP.
2. Inquiry lists failures in response to Palisades, Eaton fires (kdhnews.com) — Altadena residents learn more about how emergency missteps during the 2025 Eaton Fire left West Altadena without timely evacuation orders, contributing to most of the fire's fatalities. A new investigation details command failures while survivor leader Joy Chen describes neighbors using WhatsApp and improvised firefighting, ongoing displacement, and new tools like an insurance scorecard and legal education series to help victims recover.
3. New investigation commissioned by Newsom lists failures in response to Palisades, Eaton fires (justthenews.com) — Altadena residents get a detailed look at how officials failed them during the deadly 2025 Eaton Fire, with a new state-commissioned investigation citing delayed evacuations in West Altadena and poor coordination among agencies. Local survivor leader Joy Chen describes neighbors relying on WhatsApp and buckets to fight spot fires, while many Altadena and Palisades survivors still struggle with displacement, insurance delays, and looming legal deadlines.
4. L.A. County investigates FAIR Plan's claims practices after widespread complaints (newsbreak.com) — Altadena homeowners hit by the 2025 fires may see new accountability as Los Angeles County opens a civil investigation into the California FAIR Plan's handling of smoke-damage and other claims. Officials say devastated Altadena neighborhoods shouldn't be harmed again by delays, adjuster changes, or denied living expenses, and could seek restitution and penalties if consumer laws were violated.
5. Pasadena Unified School District trustees define 'transformation,' create community committee (pasadenastarnews.com) — Pasadena Unified leaders say rebuilding in Altadena and other new housing will add students, but not enough to prevent a projected 10–35% enrollment drop over the next decade. At a tense board meeting, trustees defined what "district transformation" means and shifted oversight to a new community committee, while parents debated whether school consolidations are necessary. These decisions could shape Altadena families' school options in coming years.
