I knew my husband was turning 50 this year but I never thought it would be like this. I mean I understand a mid-life crisis just like the next guy. A red corvette, sure, but chickens? Let me start off my saying anyone that knows me knows I'm kind of a city girl. Sure, I'm from the country but I'd like to think I've come along way since then. More like Eva Gabore in Green Acres than Elly Mae Clampette.
When your husband comes home with 12, yes 12 chicks you think, ok, don't panic here, this is just a phase. Then he says, "we'll give some away" & "don't worry, I'm sure they won't all make it". Then you picture your backyard as somewhat of a small chicken ranch. Chicken poop everywhere, your children laughing and playing and running through the chicken poop, then walking into the house with, CHICKEN POOP!
Then I sat back after taking two tylenol and I thought, ok, maybe this isn't so bad. In the case to go Organic shouldn't we all be eating more foods without pesticides and chemicals? Shouldn't our children be taught how to care for animals at a young age? Wouldn't it be nice to have fresh eggs to eat and share with my friends and neighbors? As a Nutritionist was I giving this a fair chance? The answer was no.

Sometimes we all have to go outside of our comfort zones to experience things we wouldn't necessarily experience and develop hobbies or interests we wouldn't have tried before. My husband knew if he had told me prior to bringing the chicks home I probably would have said no. So he didn't and now our little baby chicks are 3 months old. Not quite ready to produce eggs, I think that is somehwere around 6 months of maturity.
So when we all try to eat better and make a concious choice to be healthy, all of us in some way are going "outside of our comfort zones". If this is what it took for me to see the benefits of going Organic and eating healthier then so be it. As a Nutritionist I tend to get caught up in the quantity and not quality of things. So, if you see a woman bending down in a chicken coop, petting, feeding and yes, sometimes holding her chickens, don't panic! It's just me, your new Altadena chicken lover - & now pro Organic food believer!
