What is Waist Circumference?

Can you pinch more than an inch?

Some of you might remember the old Special K cereal commercial from 1979 asking: “Can you pinch more than an inch”?  It may have seemed funny back then but the truth is, they were right on track.  Another way to assess your weight is to measure your waist size. Your waistline may be telling you that you have a higher risk of developing obesity-related conditions if you are:

A man whose waist circumference is more than 40 inches
A non-pregnant woman whose waist circumference is more than 35 inches

Excessive abdominal fat is serious because it places you at greater risk for developing obesity-related conditions, such as Type 2 Diabetes, high blood cholesterol, high triglycerides, high blood pressure, and coronary artery disease. Individuals who have excessive abdominal fat should consult with their physicians, Nutritionists or other health care providers to develop a plan for losing weight.

Waist Circumference can be useful for those people categorized as normal or overweight in terms of BMI. (For example, an athlete with increased muscle mass may have a BMI greater than 25 - making him or her overweight on the BMI scale - but a Waist Circumference measurement would most likely indicate that he or she is, in fact, not overweight). Changes in Waist Circumference over time can indicated an increase or decrease in abdominal fat. Increased abdominal fat is associated with an increased risk of heart disease.

To measure your waist size (circumference), place a tape measure around your bare abdomen just above your hip bone. Be sure that the tape is snug, but does not compress your skin, and is parallel to the floor. Relax, exhale, and measure your waist.

During my own weight loss journey my tape measure was always by my side.  I knew that the data it gave me was honest and reliable (as sometimes scales are not).  Take the time to do this little tip for your self.  It may save you from experiencing serious health risks later on down the line.
