Palm Street School on Town Council Agenda Tonight

It appears Tuesday's meeting will be mainly about the proposed Arroyo Pacific high school on Palm Street.

A controversial proposed high school on Palm Street is the main item on the agenda for Tuesday's Town Council meeting.

The proposal comes from the Arcadia-based Arroyo Pacific Academy and would bring a private high school with a maximum capacity of 250 kids to 183-205 Palm St.

The Town Council's Land Use Committee was presented with the plan at a meeting earlier this month and .

The site has been an issue in the past and sparked the formation of the Palm Street Area Resident's Association (PSARA) after the Sahag-Mesrob Armenian Christian School operated at the site during the 2008-09 school year without telling the community or acquiring all the necessary permits from L.A. County.

The Land Use Committee earlier this month was packed with supporters of the school, but also included residents in opposition to the plan, many of whom live immediately adjacent to the proposed site.  One man at the meeting was asked to leave by Sheriff's deputies after yelling at supporters during the public comment part of the meeting.

Like the Land Use Committee, the Town Council does not have the authority to deny the school a permit, but only to make recommendations to the County Planning Department on whether to grant the permit or not.
