626 Golden Streets Returns To San Gabriel Valley

The 626 Golden Streets, an open streets event, will allow residents to run, walk or bike across the SGV.

ARCADIA, CA — Have you ever dreamed of what the San Gabriel Valley would look like with no traffic? Let alone, no cars at all?

On March 5, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. you will get to see exactly that. Coincidentally, the event falls upon the grand opening of the Gold Line from Pasadena to Azusa.

"Open Streets initiatives temporarily closes streets to automobile traffic, and opens them to cyclists, pedestrians and other modes of transportation," Metro spokesperson said.

Picture this: 17 miles of open space to walk, run, skate and bike across San Gabriel Valley, including Huntington Drive? It's almost unimaginable. However, on March 5, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. that is exactly what the residents are going to get.

The route for 626 Golden Streets spans from Azusa to South Pasadena, threaded by the Gold Line, running Saturday service levels with longer, three car trains to support the event.

Stations for the event, called "Hubs" will each have activities, including free water, first aid, information booths and portable restrooms and handwash stations.

Foothill Gold Line is hosting the Arcadia hub for 2017.

"Foothill Gold Line staff will be hosting a booth near the Azusa Downtown station," they said. "Stop by and say hi or to ask any questions you may have about the Glendora to Montclair extension."

Arcadia's hub will include music, yoga, hula, chalk artists, and food trucks.

Buy your TAP card in advance and avoid the lines, the Metro recommended. Round trip fares are only $3.50 in stored value.

Note: if you are doing Bikes on Board, remember, if the train is full you will have to wait for the next train. Use designated bicycle space, only, and do not block doors or aisles.

"Open Streets have quickly become one of the most innovative advancements in the livable cities movement," Metro said.
