Patch Blog: Name Badges Done Wrong

Is it possible to screw up a name badge? Oh, Yeah. . . Feel the difference when you see a name badge done right!

Since name badges done wrong is one of my pet peeves—hardly anyone does it right—I’d like to offer some food for thought.

Name badges foster a bond between the service employee and the customer! When one wears a name badge, “bonding” is for sure going to happen, but I don’t want to bond with someone’s belly button!

What’s up with that?

Please don’t buy your staff lanyards to wear around their neck and use as a name badge holder.  I know this is convenient (they won’t get strangled the next time they have to use their badge to open a door), but it really doesn’t add to the professionalism that you’re trying to achieve.

Plus, I don’t wear my glasses. But, even if I did, the type face on some name badges is so small that I’m squinting while also looking at someone’s belly button! Not a good visual!

Check out the name badges the next time you go shopping. Notice how many times a name badge is done wrong.  And then, every so often, you’ll see a name badge done right.

For example, you’ll notice a badge with the first name, in large font, clipped below the right shoulder. Feel the difference when you see a name badge done right?  Don’t you want your customers to have this feeling? Granted, it’s a little thing, but the little things really add up to a great customer experience. And customers who have a great experience, will buy from you again and again.

So, if you want to grow your business (and who doesn’t) take a minute to look at your name badges.  Are you bonding with a belly button?
